Heretat Mont Rubi, Alt Penedes, Spain

L'Avella, which gives its name to the village where the estate is located, is characterised by the interaction of the vineyards within the distinctive habitat which surrounds them; many over 50 years of age.  HMR is located in the small town of Font-Rubi, on the western side of the Penedes wine region. It is a family run winery founded in 1984. They own and control over 30 hectares of vineyards at altitudes within 500 and 800 meters above sea level.

HMR have been investing in the recovery of the almost extinct native grape Sumoll. There are only  around 300 hectares of planted Sumoll remaining today. This variety requires delicate treatment in the vineyard and winery given its thin skin, which has been referred to as the "Pinot Noir of the Mediterranean".

The harvest is manual, selective and completed in cases during the coolest hours of the day, in order to maintain the grape as intact as possible until it reaches the winery. They also use bio-dynamic methods, following the different lunar phases both in the vineyard and the winery.

HMR - Durona 2009

Mysterious and expressive. Elegant but also powerful.

Grapes: Sumoll 50%, Garnacha 25%, Samsó 25%. Alc: 14.5%.  Sulphite: 86 mg/L

Vinification: Manual selective harvest in 20kg cases. Grapes are transported to winery in refrigerated trucks; de stemming and cold vatting; cold skin maceration; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast is carried out in open polyester containers, with daily manual pigeage for the extraction. Gentle pressing in basket press is followed by an ageing on fine lees in new 300 L French oak barrels (30%), second use 300 L barrels (35%) and third use 300 L barrel (35%). This ageing continues for about 12 months, and is followed by 4 years of rest before it is released to the market.

Tasting and pairing: On the nose Durona is expressive and mysterious with undergrowth, black ripe fruit, figs and medicinal notes. In the mouth, Durona is elegant but powerful at the same time, with black fruit, balsamic flavours coming through on its long and expansive finish. Enjoy it with time and try to decant it, if you have the chance. Try it with meat dishes such as game and beef and black truffle mushroom risotto.
